Having made the decision to replace your current shower with a brand new one but, are not sure what tradesman to hire. How long the job it will take to complete? Or how much to materials will cost? Hopefully this information will make your decisions easier. In most instances an old shower will be made up of a stainless steel tray, hardboard- backed shower lining and a shower curtain or maybe a panel sliding door of glass or plastic enclosed with an aluminum frame. The most popular replacement showers are either an acrylic tray, tiled or glass wall with a glass door or a full acrylic unit with a glass door.

As you plan for your project you may find that both a builder and a plumber are required for this job to be done properly. Plumbing may need to be re-directed. Walls may have to be moved. The budget for the project will have to be carefully considered and reflect the necessary work that is being considered. Decide what actually needs to be done. When exactly to get a plumber in? What has to happen next? How much chaos will doing this particular renovation cause? What is the timeline going to be? Can you do some of the work to offset costs? There might be some surprises that you will not know about until you actually start the job. Problems cannot always be seen prior to the builder giving a quote. The builder and the plumber may be in and out of your house as the job progresses and their services are required to advance the installation. They need to be able to work together. The plumber makes sure all the water mains are turned off and back on when the shower and waste are tested. The builder completes the unit's installation, which comes with instructions and the proper mastics or sealants to complete the job properly. Most shower screen and door units require a sealant around the outside of the unit only. Tape each side of the area to be sealed, usually around the outside edge of the screen and door unit, but the instructions will explain exactly. Once the sealant has been applied, you should remove the tape immediately.

Other jobs that need to be done are the plastering and/or painting the walls outside the shower unit area. In this case, this is a job that can be done by the owner. Some of the materials can be supplied by the owner or the plumber or builder can furnish their own supplies, the cost of which can be figured into the overall price of the job. Finally, keep in mind the beautiful end result.
